Defence is your melee skill that determines your defence while fighting monsters. As you raise your Defence skill, you will deflect damage more consistently and it allows you to use higher tier armour to deflect even more damage.

How to train Defence

In order to gain experience in the Defence skill, you need to have your attack style set to Accurate or Controlled. Accurate gives accuracy bonuses for using it, whilst controlled splits your experience up between the 3 melee skills (Attack, Strength, and Defence). If you want to focus mainly on Defence experience, you should use Block.

Defence bonuses

The higher a target's Defence level, the less likely one is to land successful attacks (Melee or Ranged-based damage greater than zero, or Magic-based offensive spells that don't Splash) against said target. As such, it is a vital skill in high-level PvM and PvP situations. Defence does not decrease the amount of damage that an opponent can deal against you.

A player's Ranged level will not increase their ranged defence, but magical defence is different - it is based on 70% of the player's Magic level, while the remaining 30% is the player's Defence level, which is then followed by the player's magical defence bonus from their armour.

There are some temporary boosts you can get in RuneSaga to help not only your attack skill, but also your other melee skills in tandem.

Defence Potion 3-12 You get 3 base, +1 for every 10 attack levels rounded down. So 99 attack you get 3 + 9, 90 is the same. 80-89 is 3+8, etc.

Provides same boost to both Attack and Strength.

Super Defence 5-19 You get 5 base, +1 for 15% of your current attack level rounded down. So 99 attack gets you 5 + 14. Then at 93 attack it drops down to 5+13, etc.
Super Combat Potion 5-19 You get 5 base, +1 for 15% of your current attack level rounded down. So 99 attack gets you 5 + 14. Then at 93 attack it drops down to 5+13, etc.

Provides the same boost to Attack, Strength and Defence.

Celestial Super Defence 5-19 You get 5 base, +1 for 15% of your current attack level rounded down. So 99 attack gets you 5 + 14. Then at 93 attack it drops down to 5+13, etc.

Same boost as a Super Attack, except your bonus will not decay for 5 minutes. BREWS STILL LOWER YOUR STATS

Celestial Super Combat 7-21 You get 7 base, +1 for 15% of your current attack level rounded down. So 99 attack gets you 7 + 14. Then at 93 attack it drops down to 7 + 14, etc.
